Airheads memories... I grew up in a poor neighborhood with poor but
thrifty parents. We didn't have a lot of money, but we were happy;
us kids were raised on love and discipline. My parents, young but
wise, would give us 30 cents a week allowances (a lot of money for a
7-year-old!)
Every Saturday, me and my dad would walk to the gas station 5
blocks away to go "get a treat!" Airheads were the only candy I
could afford (at 17 cents a stick) that allowed me to save a nickel
for the church offering the next day, and 8 cents for my piggy bank.
I learned the benefit of long-term savings (more Airheads!),
charity, and the importance of a treat every now and then... the
most invaluable knowledge in my adult life. ~ Hailey from Minnesota
When I was growing up, my dad would make me take swimming lessons
every week during the summer at a local campground. I hated the
lessons and every time we'd leave for them, I'd try to come up with
some excuse why I didn't need them. Ultimately, they never worked
and I ended up having to practice different strokes till my arms
were sore. Luckily, my dad would reward me with candy from the
campground's store if I did well for the day. One candy I always got
was Airheads. I'd beg for lots, though always settled for one of
each flavor.
It's now many years later and I still pick up Airheads now and
again when I see them in stores, they are the candy that taught me
to swim after all.
