Black Licorice Dollar memories... For most of my childhood, I didn't enjoy the taste of black
licorice. It was an adult candy...and "their taste buds must be broken," I always said. But that would soon change.
My grandmother was a knitter. Every evening after supper, she would knit at the kitchen table while enjoying pleasant conversation with
Grandpa, even though he was too busy finishing the crossword puzzle to pay attention.
Grandma must have grown tired of knitting the usual sweaters and mittens because one Easter she decided to whip up something different. My
grandfather had grumbled some weeks earlier that Grandma's favorite candy (black licorice dollars) resembled a certain rabbit by-product.
She seemed slightly offended at the time, but little did he know, Grandpa had just given her an idea.
On Easter morning I was awoken by the laughter of my family, followed by a glimpse of something rarely seen...Grandpa's face red with
embarrassment. I noticed a light-blue bunny in his hands. It had green eyes, a red nose, whiskers and a fluffy pink tail. I recognized
Grandma's handiwork when I saw it, but I was confused. "Here, give it a squeeze," said Grandpa. I did, and out popped a black licorice
dollar. Hopefully, I don't need to say where it came from. Being a 9-year-old boy, I thought this was the greatest invention ever. I didn't
think twice about eating a candy I had previously despised, and I begged Grandma to let me take it to school the next day.
That's how I became "the boy with the candy-pooping rabbit". Black licorice dollars are still one of my favorite snacks. ~ David from
