Look candy history

Sam Altshuler, a Russian immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1917, founded Annabelle Candy Co., Inc., in 1950. He learned the art of candy making, and after years of perfecting his recipe, finally achieved success with his Rocky Road candy bar. He named his business the Annabelle Candy Company after his daughter, and began manufacturing Rocky Road in San Francisco. The item quickly gained popularity throughout the western United States where it has its strongest hold today, and is currently ranked highly among the top best selling chocolate bars on the West Coast.

In 1972, the Company purchased Golden Nugget Candy Company, of San Francisco, the makers of Big Hunk and Look candy bars, and began manufacturing those products. In 1978, Annabelle acquired of the Cardinet Candy Co., which manufactured U-NO and Abba Zaba candy bars.

What started as a family business continues today as the one of the largest independently owned candy bar manufacturers in the United States, producing some of the most popular and traditional West Coast items available on the market today.

Look candy memories... In my family we always played a lot of practical jokes on one another, My big brother being the worst of us all. My favorite candy was a candy called Look, and believe me, that was his biggest source of harassing me.

Every week when we went grocery shopping my mom would make sure that she bought me enough of my delicious candy to last me until the next shopping day, or she thought. When we would get home from our daily routine I would get two Looks' and sit down to watch television and my brother would sit beside me on the couch. All of a sudden he would holler "Jason look" and point out the window. As soon as I would look he would grab one of my candies and run to his room. It did me no good to chase him because he would always lock the door. I don't know if I just forgot what he was going to do or if I just thought it was a fun game, but I fell for it every time.

When I was browsing your website and saw Look candy all those wonderful memories came flooding back and I just had to call him. We laughed for hours over our silly game.  ~ Gary from Missouri

My sister and I grew up in Coquille, Oregon eating Look candy bars. My mom would store them in the freezer to keep them fresh. When we were ready to eat one we would break them into bite size pieces which made them so good & crunchy let alone easy to eat! My mom used these candy bars as a bargaining tool in our childhood! We both now live in Florida and these treats are not sold, or as I was told over the phone, by Annabelle Candy Co., east of the Mississippi River!

So, we are forced to order them by mail. We are both in our 50's and still adore them! We absolutely do not mind the wait as long as we get our wonderful childhood treats! I have even turned my co-workers onto them and we go in together when ordering Looks! My co-worker did find some Look bars in our mall at a candy specialty store but as you can probably figure out, it's more economical to order them through the mail! But, when we get in a pinch, we will find our way to the mall & breakdown and buy a couple while we wait for our mail order Thank yall so much for keeping our childhood & adult dreams alive with the wonderful chocolate, nougat, and nutty Look bars! ~ Julia from Florida
