Milky Way candy bar

M&Ms were first introduced in 1941 to American soldiers serving in World War II. They were hand packed in a paper tube to prevent melting in hot weather.

The letter "M" first appeared in 1950. Since much of the product was sold in bulk, the Mars Company wanted to make sure their customers received the real thing. They used the advertising slogan, "Look for the M on each piece."

In 1954, Peanut M&Ms were introduced. At the same time the M&M's brand characters and the famous slogan "The milk chocolate that melts in your mouth, not in your hand" were both trademarked.

M & Ms memories... When my brother and I were small we were allowed to go to the little store a few doors down if we were good. I was around four or five and wore these little halter tops and shorts that my Mom made. I would always buy M & Ms with my share of the money and put in my halter. They would last all day long.

When Mom would take off my clothes at night for bath time M & Ms would go everywhere. I still keep a bag around the house for myself and my two granddaughters. They are M & M junkies just like me. ~ Cindy from Tennessee

When I was a kid whenever we'd visit my grandparents' house my grandmother kept M&Ms in her coffee table drawer. We knew she'd eventually offer us some. We just had to wait patiently to see when it was going to be. She kept two bags of M&Ms in the coffee table drawer one plain and one peanut.

Each time we went to her house we got to choose which kind we wanted. It was soon that I learned that she would give us less of the peanut kind and more of the plain so that I began to ask for the plain variety figuring out that I would get more of those. It was only then that we first had M&Ms and it was then that I remember all of the different colors of M&Ms including the tan ones.

It was until later when my sisters and I got older that we began spending our allowance money on M&Ms where we bought huge bags of M&Ms and then of course dividing them evenly by color. M&Ms now a long time favorite that was introduced to me by my grandmother. ~ Kelly from Texas

I remember when I was a kid, my grandfather would bring me a bag of M&M's every time he came to visit. He always made me guess what hand they were in.  And I never seemed to be wrong! Only because he made sure I picked the right one! But I do remember how very much I loved those candies.

Now at 25, my grandfather has been gone for 14 years, so every time I go visit his grave site, I always bring a pack of M&M plain candies, and leave them there for him. And in some silly way, I do think he knows it! ~ Nikki from New Jersey
