Caramel Creams / Bull's Eyes memories...

I stumbled upon Caramel Creams almost
by accident. One of my junior-high classes had a guest speaker who brought
candy to hand out for anyone who participated in her presentation of games
and other exciting things. At the end of the day, a few of us stayed after
to clean up the room, and she offered us handfuls of candy from theplastic
bucket she'd brought. I took my handful and walked home; when I got home, I
took them out of my pocket, but one of the candies looked strange--it was a
weird caramel with something white inside it. I put it in my mouth and
chewed it slowly, trying to figure it out...and it was delicious! The
"creamy" stuff in the center wasn't really creamy--it was like sugar that
melted on my tongue. And the caramel was very dense and chewy, a caramel
with a lot of "substance."
After that, I mostly forgot about the
caramel creams, but one day my mother brought some candy home. She said it was
very inexpensive at a small shop and so she thought she'd give it a try. She
produced 2 small bags of Goetze's Caramel Creams--I was ecstatic! I ate close to
20 (I wish I could eat sweets with wild abandon now as I could then!). From then
on, whenever I'd have a school trip or long event, I'd ask her to buy me some
caramel creams that I could have as a special treat. I remember offering them to
lots of people, but no one seemed to be enticed by them.
I remember that my favorite way to eat the caramel creams was to push the
"creamy" center out with my finger and let it melt on my tongue, then eat the
caramel ring in small bites, really savoring each bite. I thought I'd never be
able to find them again, but I recently saw them in Target stores on the candy
rack. I've grown out of these candies quite a bit...I think I "burned myself
out" by eating so many when I was younger....but I sometimes have a sugar-fix
and then ONLY Goetze's will do! ! Cayla from Nebraska
I remember when I was little I would save my allowance up to go to the store on the weekends. We would always
get to go to the candy section and pick out ONE thing with our money. I would always get the caramel creams along with cow tails. I used to suck out
the middles first and then eat the caramel.
Now I buy them for my daughters and they do the same as I used to do. Suck the middle out to eat the caramel.
Its fun watching your kids grow up with the things you had when you were little. ~ Susie from Kentucky
