Cella's Chocolate Covered Cherries memories...

I have a funny memory about
eating Cella's chocolate covered cherries. The candy was so rich
that we were given only one or maybe 2 at a time (mom didn't want
chubby kids... it didn't help!). I devised a method of eating them
to make them last. I would sneak into the kitchen "hardware drawer"
and get a toothpick. I would very slowly and carefully bore a hole
into the top of the candy until I "stuck oil." I would then slowly
suck out the sweet liquid until I had drunk every last drop. Then I
would very carefully bite off just the top of the candy to get to
the cherry inside...which I could spear with my toothpick. Once
eaten, I would them eat the entire rest of the chocolate shell. My
brother and sister thought I was nuts eating it that way... but I
loved those chocolate covered cherries more than anything! ~ Andrew

My father came here from Lithuania in
1916, married my mom in 1932. Her first box of candy was Cella's Liquid
Chocolate Covered Cherries. Needless to say as kids this is the best treat we
had growing up during the depression. Not able to have all we wanted under the
circumstances, we sure developed a craving for them. Thinking all
chocolate covered cherries were the same, found out that Queen Anne and others
were loaded with a cream filling... not at all to our liking. Since then, and I'm
71 now, I've eaten hundreds of boxes of Cella's chocolate covered cherries, but can only find them
around Christmas or this year around Valentines Day.
I'd love to have all that I
can eat as I can eat a box at one sitting. My husband who passed away recently
kept me supplied when they were available here in Colorado. However I am
handicapped and cannot always get out when they are available here. Have a grand
and glorious day. ~Betty from Colorado
I remember that we never had much money
in the day. That made treats so much more special. So when my dad got chocolate
covered cherries, they were always Cella's in that beautiful red foil. I would
always unwrap them carefully, so that I could have the foil in one piece. Then I
could use it for my dolls.
I would help him with his second job to
get it done quicker, nobody minded in those days. Then sometimes he would buy
those yummy cherries. He showed me how to eat them properly...
1. Nibble a little hole in the bottom
corner.
2. Suck the juice out.
3. Then eat the bottom.
4. Eat the yummy cherry.
5. Enjoy the chocolate!
Dad has passed now, but the memories are
still here. Especially when I enjoy a Cello's chocolate covered cherry. ~
