Cherry Mash memories...

When I was young, my mother and I spent
our days at home. After lunch we would always have a treat. Mom bought lollipops
for me and she would have a Cherry Mash. I asked her one day if I could have one
of her candy bars and she explained that Cherry Mash were kind of an adult candy
and I wouldn't like it.
About that time my baby brother woke up
from his nap and mom got up to get him. I looked over at her candy and the
temptation was just too great. When she came back and sat down, she reached for
her candy and all that was left was the wrapper. I was afraid she was going to
be mad and quickly said I was sorry.
To my amazement she just looked at me and
smiled and said " sweety, there's no need to be sorry, I was the one who thought
you wouldn't like it, but from now on we will both have Cherry Mash!" To this
day when I go visit my mother I always stop by the store and buy two Cherry Mash
and we sit and enjoy them and laugh about the day that my adult taste buds
kicked in. ~ Melissa from Missouri
My mother trekked to town every two weeks for groceries in the 1950s. Taking six children to the store was out
of the question, but we looked forward to her excursion. Although money was tight, she always returned with a single candy bar for each of us.
I'm not sure how it was determined who received the Zero, the Snickers Bar, the Milky Way or other assorted
candy bars. The one she reserved for herself was a Cherry Mash. In my mind, I counted that Cherry Mash as an adult treat, as it was never offered to
us. Now when I see one, it brings back memories of a special time. ~ Virginia from Florida
I was SO excited to become an adult and
buy a Cherry Mash! My mother would eat them when I & my siblings were small. She
told us they were only for adults, and WE BELIEVED HER!! I remember her watching
soap operas in the afternoon, eating a Cherry Mash, and drinking Coke with
lemon. (Another "adult only" beverage). Even now when I eat one, I feel grown up
and decadent!
I love the recipe on the wrapper for
Cherry Mash sundaes-they are excellent! I have made them for my family, and my
kids think their Grandma's chicanery is hilarious. I guess in retrospect I
agree, as it was a very unique way to keep me from eating my Mother's candy. ~
