Life Savers memories...

Life Savers

As a child, in the Fifties, I used to ride the New Haven Railroad with my mother into New York City. On the way back from New York, if you were seated on the left side of the train, you passed a Life Saver factory. On the outside of the factory, were huge representations of packages of Life Savers.

The ones that I remember on the side of the building, were the packages with the five flavors and Pep-O-Mint, and I think Cryst-O-Mint. I believe they were lit up at night. It was very exciting to pass a place where candy was being made all day! My favorite flavors were Choc-O-Mint and Stik-O-Pep. The latter was a reminder of Christmas all year round! ~ Wendy from Florida

Christmas just wasn't Christmas until I got my Lifesavers Christmas Story Book. I looked forward to that as much as I did my Christmas stocking. The first Christmas I didn't receive one, I was in 7th grade. I remember thinking, "is it over because I'm not a kid anymore?" I never rushed through my lifesavers as I did everything else, I savored each one. Kept them a secret and shared them only with my brother. I'm 42 now, I'd love to find the "book" under my tree next Christmas! ~ Wynona from Georgia

When I was 9 years old my oldest brother who I was very close was getting ready to go to college. He went to his high school to return some of the library books he still had out and he brought me along.

As we walked along we eventually stopped at the vending machine and asked me if I wanted anything. I said sure and chose the tube of life savers that was near the bottom. As we walked through that empty school I was thinking how lucky I was to have a brother like him. And while he might not always around, Life Savers would be around and whenever I popped that first one into my mouth, I could think of him. ~ Lucas from New York
