Long Boys memories...

I was born in New Orleans and loved the
chewy coconut flavor as a kid. We would obviously get them on Halloween, but a
special surprise was to catch them off the floats during Mardi Gras. My Mom loved
them and would comment on how they could pull your fillings out, BUT IT WAS
WORTH IT!
I'm 49 now and living in Key West. My Yankee girl friend from
Pittsburgh (GO STEELERS) had never heard of Long Boys. SOOOOO, we googled and
found out that this was a southern treat from the 50's.
Thank God they are still around. ~ A CHILD AT HEART, BILL from Florida
When I was 10, I lived in Alabama with my
mother and my two sisters. School was closed one day for a PTA conference. My
mother left to attend the conference and left my sisters and I money to buy
lunch (sandwiches) at the deli. My sister and I went and brought bags of Coconut
Long boys, Lemonheads, Jolly Ranchers and Pickles.
We tried to eat this junk food before our mother came home, so she wouldn't know
we didn't spend the money as she told us. When she came home she stared laughing
at us, because not only did she see all the candy wrappers, but she saw us
running back and forth to the bathroom throwing up.
To this day we still talk about this incident and I still eat the Coconut Long
Boys with my children, too but not with pickles. ~ Veronica from New York
I delighted found Long Boys in our Gift
Shop while working at Doctor's Hospital. Finding these to be an awesome treat, I
bought a bag of Long Boys to take back to share with the nurses I worked with.
When I offered one to one of my co-workers, she flipped out! "Who told you -
that's not funny!"
I was shocked at her response to my offer
of a piece of candy... I had never heard her story of how she lost a filling
eating a Long Boy months before! She had a loose filling and she ate so many,
she lost the filling! She thought I was pulling a joke on her! We both enjoyed a
Long Boy together in celebration of the memory! ~ Carolyn from South Carolina
