Peanut Chews memories...

I am 42 years old. Back in the 60's when I was a really young kid with 3 brothers close to my age, I lived
in Philadelphia, around the corner from the Goldberg Peanut Chew factory. Just past the factory was a candy store named Nellie was about as old as
a person can get, and her store was even older. My fondest memory of Nellie's was the long windowed penny candy display with dozens of candy
selections.
On hot summer days, the smell of peanut chews being made at the factory would waft down my block and get my brothers and me ready for some candy.
One such hot summer day, my mother gave us a quarter (enough to bring back quite a haul in penny candies) and off we went to Nellie's. We made our
purchase with much fanfare when we left Nellie's we parked ourselves quickly at one of the Peanut Chew Factory's loading dock doors to divide up
what we had bought.
As we sat there and a man from the factory came out the loading dock door with a big blue commercial sized box
of Peanut Chews. "Don't eat that other candy, he said to us, "Eat Goldenberg Peanut Chews" as he handed us four the entire box. We believed at that
moment that we were the luckiest kids in the world. Funny enough, the candy that I was munching on when the fellow approached us was none other than a

We had a local candy store in West Haven, CT, where I grew up - Fater's was the name of the store. They had
rows of barrels filled with penny candies. My favorite was Peanut Chews. When I was good, my dad would give me a quarter, and I would run down to
Fater's, and fill my pockets with Peanut Chews. Then I would go to our local movie Theater, and eat Peanut Chews while watching the weekly movie. I

This is not actually a childhood story,
but a continuous memory. I was originally from the wonderful state of New
Jersey. I worked for a medical transport company for years, and I really enjoyed
the fact that everyday for lunch I could stop at WaWa.
I would always get the same thing for
lunch. I was never really one on change. I always ordered the turkey with cheese
on a Kaiser roll. Before walking to the counter to pay I always walked down the
candy isle to pick up my 2oz Goldberg Peanut Chew for desert.
I have since those days joined the
military, and left the comfort of my typical world with all that I love. I was
in Germany for three years, and now reside in Oklahoma. Everyday I still think
about the good old days, and try to tell myself that someday I just might get my
favorite candy back. To all those who can walk into WaWa right now; " Enjoy what
you have, for you never know what you got till it is gone." ~ Alexandra from
Oklahoma
