Ribbon Candy memories...

Christmas in our house like
many others had many family traditions. Ribbon candy in a special
glass jar on the coffee table was one of them. We were never allowed
to eat any. It was for company. Well, the company never ate any of
it ever. It sat there until after the holidays were over and all of
it was stuck together in one big clump. Only then were we allowed to
have any. And at that point we never wanted any. I now have a jar on
my coffee table. But, it is 1/2 empty as we are finally allowed to
enjoy it. ~ Wayne from New York
Ribbon candy just wasn't Christmas
without the good o' ribbon candy! Ummmm soooooooo good! My Mom would ALWAYS go
to Texarkana, TX to the ABC Candy Company and buy this candy and oodles of other
types of good o' candy and fruit too! Then when we'd get home, Mama would hide
everything until Christmas Eve, and then we were only a few pieces - saving it
for Christmas Day!
She would cook, fruitcakes, Jam cakes, pies, everything.
There were 7 kids in our family and the whole darn family would ALWAYS come to
our house for Thanks Giving and Christmas. But I'll never, ever forget the
delicious candy that my Mama bought just for us kids. She was a wonderful Mother
and a wonderful person and shared with other family and neighbors too. ~ Mary
Ann from Texas
I have always loved ribbon candy. As a
child, I would hide some of it opened so that it would become somewhat "gummy"
and sticky, the way I prefer to eat it. For many years, we had not been able to
find it. However, for about the last 4 years my mom has found it somewhere every
year and given me a box.
I still open the box and let the candy age before I eat
it. Well, I have to have a little before then, but I let most of it sit until it
is just right. The only difference is that, since I am "Mom" now, I don't have
to hide it to keep others from eating it ahead of its time. ~ Sheryl from Texas
I grew up back east in a very rural town.
We didn't have much money but I knew Christmas was on it's way each year when
the box of Ribbon Candy appeared. With all of the beautiful colors, the new box
looked like beautiful Christmas decorations (don't try to hang them on the tree
though, I tried). We weren't allowed to actually eat any of the Ribbon Candy
until Christmas Day. I loved taking out small pieces of each color and savoring
each flavor. My four siblings, however, would just grab and eat-any color, any
flavor.
When I moved out and got my first apartment, I did go out a buy a box of Ribbon
Candy at Christmas ( but I didn't wait until Christmas to eat it). I was elated
a few years later when I found some "Ribbon Candy" Christmas tree ornaments. Now
I really can decorate my tree with the Ribbon Candy.
Thank you for letting me share my story. ~ Susan from California
