Valomilk memories...

I remember the Halloween I was
8 years old I had pneumonia of all things and couldn't go
trick-or-treating. My older sister came into my sickroom after her
yearly foray in the neighborhood to get candy and dumped out all the
candy out of her bag right on my bed and said, "Go ahead-pick
whatever you want!".
Well, she had 2 Valomilk bars which I
knew were also her favorite but she let me have them BOTH! To this day, 40+
years later, whenever I see Valomilks I think about that Halloween I was so sick
and how wonderful it turned out when my big sister let me have her candy. ~ Debi

I was riding the rails through Kansas as
a hobo in 1936 when I first had a Valomilk. I stopped in at the local general
store in Iola to ask if they needed any help sweeping up. The kindly old gent
who ran the store said no, but his customer said he could use some help. He
turned out to be none other than Dave Denton, a salesman for Valomilk. I said
"what's Valomilk?".
He gave me one and I thought it was the
best candy I had ever eaten. I helped him carry around the boxes of candy on his
sales route in the mid-west that summer. Every time we crossed paths with some
of my fellow hobos, I would swipe a Valomilk or two and give them a treat. We
hobos had a hard lot and any kindness was appreciated. Times were tough, and
after I lost that job, I went back on the rails to ride out the depression. ~

I would buy Valomilk candy from the
school vending machine at the end of lunch, followed by recess. The bell would
ring at 1PM. I would sneak the candy into class and hope the nuns wouldn't see
me eating it. I would take small bites and thy to make it last till the bell
rand for dismissal at 3pm. They were only a dime in the late 50's. ~ Glenn from
