Necco Wafers memories... As a youngster
growing up in the 50's, our neighborhood had a nearby shopping area
with a movie theater. On "haircut" Saturday my Mother would give
me a dollar--75 cents for the barber, 15 cents for movie admission;
leaving me 10 cents--which always went for two 5 cent rolls of Necco
Wafers. I could make the two rolls last through the news reel,
previews, cartoon and the feature. Other Saturdays, the money was only
a quarter, but it still left enough for my two rolls of Necco Wafers.
Today, I still buy the Necco Wafers
(they aren't a nickel any longer) but I buy two rolls at a time and
the wafers taste exactly as I remember-- a great way for me to take a
nostalgic trip back to my youth and old neighborhood. ~ Wallace from
Mississippi
My father would come
home from work with a little paper brown bag. Not the size that a
lunch would fit it, the size made just for candy. He would come home,
say Hi to my Mom and we would just kind of hover around him until he
would acknowledge us (he knew we were waiting for the candy, he didn't
hide the bag as he came in the door) He wasn't mean and he didn't make
us suffer too long. By the way there were 5 of us. He would bring us
all home our favorite candy. Mine was Necco Wafers. The tasted great,
and there were so many of them, never mind the assortment of color.
My Dad also got a treat in giving me
the Necco Wafers. I didn't like licorice, so as I would come to the
black one (licorice), I would run over to my Dad and he would
immediately pop it into his mouth. Such a nice memory, you tend to
forget these great things in life until you see something that
triggers your memory. Thanks! ~ Dee Dee from New York
I remember the first time I ate Necco Wafers was as a child in 3rd grade. Going to a
Catholic school, we were all preparing to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. Since we could not use the real thing, we used Necco
Wafers! I couldn't wait until we practiced which was often!
After this I was hooked! I would walk a few miles to our local candy shop and use my allowance to purchase a
few rolls. My brother, sister and I would all beg our parents to purchase these treats for long trips just so we could let the flavor fill
out mouths for an extended period of time. Old Time Candy, I salute you for making these candies readily available for my enjoyment and for
bringing those memories of childhood rushing back! ~ Brian from Connecticut
