Payday candy bar history

Payday in the 1950sHooray for Hollywood, Hollywood Candy Company of Minneapolis, MN. that is. It was invented in 1932. The inventors were trying to come up with a name for the new candy bar when one of them suggested Payday since it just happened to be payday at the company. The name stuck.

Hollywood also made other famous candy bars such as Butternut (1916), Zero (1920) and Milk Shake (1927). Today only the Zero and Payday are still being made by Hershey Foods.

Payday Memories... When I was a kid, there was a small candy store in my town that my friends and I would go to after school to get a sugar fix. One day while browsing the countless counters of lovely confectionaries, I noticed something that caught my eye, a payday bar. Being a peanut fan, I figured I would give it a shot. The candy was simply amazing. I can still remember that day in the candy store every time that I bite into one of them.

It is just one of those things that really make me remember my childhood, and all the great times my friends and I had together. Spending time in the summer building forts in the river, and then going into the candy store, dirty up to the neck with mud, and getting a payday. Such a wonderful product that takes me back to the days of my childhood. ~ Dan from Pennsylvania

As a small child, my mom went to work at a sewing factory here in Andalusia, Alabama. My brother and I had to stay with my aunt while mom was at work. We were not very happy that mom was not at home with us but she promised us a surprise when she got paid. Her first payday and ever other payday thereafter, she would bring us a Payday candy bar. We looked forward to mom's payday but we especially looked forward to our "Payday" candy bar.  ~ Shirley from Alabama

When I was in college, one semester I had calculus at 8:00 in the morning. I am not a morning person; I had a hard time just getting out of my warm bed and going out into the cold winter air - there was no time for breakfast. When I got to the math building, there was a candy machine right outside my class, and I would always grab a quick Payday bar to eat for a burst of energy.

Paydays were my reason to get up instead of rolling over in bed and skipping class. Ever since then, I've loved the sweet and salty taste of Payday bars. ~ Vicki from Arizona
