Spearmint Leaves memories... As often as possible on a Saturday, I would trek to the local movie
house. On the way I would detour to the drug store and purchase spearmint leaves which sold for a nickel.
The movie house offered two second run movies that played continuously. I always seemed to arrive in
the middle of one of the movies. I would watch the end of the first movie, all of the second, and the beginning of the first movie.
(Sometimes the 1st all the way through if I like it.)
My budget allowed movie admission, popcorn, and the spearmint leaves. I could stay in the theater
until my movie lust was sated and my candy supply depleted.
Nowadays movie going is more regimented, but I still cannot go to a movie theater without buying
popcorn and smuggling in spearmint leaves. ~ Lillian from Maine
Since my birthday is the day
before Halloween, as a child my parents would let me dress up in my
Halloween costume on October 30 and go trick-or-treating a day
early. The catch was that on my birthday, I had to GIVE candy to
everyone whose house I went to. Only on Halloween proper could I GET
candy.
One of my fondest childhood
memories is seeing my neighbors' eyes light up when I knocked on
their door on my birthday with a candy treat for them-- usually
Spearmint Leaves. And I always made out very well in the candy
department the next day, because of my parents' generous belief that
one should give to others, not just take.
Spearmint leaves were a
favorite of my late father, who brought them home often. I plan to
bake a green apple-shaped birthday cake for a friend, which I will
decorate with Green Spearmint Leaf Candy. ~ Lynn from Utah
Some of my fondest memories
are of my Grandmother. I was the last grandchild and my grandma was
very old by the time I arrived. Our times together were special
because she was in a chair for most of the day and couldn't get
around or do activities with me. I would sit on her lap and she
would reach into a huge chest that she kept beside her chair.
Oh, the anticipation of what
she would bring out of that drawer was unbearable!! Most times I
could rely on one thing for sure ... Spearmint Leaves! Oh, the joy
and happiness for a snack with my Grandma. We'd sit there and eat
spearmint leaves and watch a soap opera or I'd read a story to her
out of a large-print Reader's Digest.
I'm thirty-three years old
now and I still crave those wonderful sweet and gummy snacks Grandma
gave me. I only have to smell one to have a flashback to my
childhood. ~ Susanna from PA
