Toffifay memories... I remember during the early to middle
1980s, sophistication was a characteristic that many people strived
for. Marketing professionals and advertising firms fed this coveted
desire to the public by taking ordinary products and turning them
into upscale products. Two major examples, were Gleem toothpaste,
with its "for adults only," campaign, and Toffifay candy, with its
own "for adults only," campaign.
As a small child, any candy was good candy. The ads proclaiming
the candy "too good for children," only whetting my appetite even
more. I had asked my mother, who had obviously not paid attention to
the Toffifay ad, to buy me a package at the checkout counter (they
came in a 3 piece package). I think it was my first guilty pleasure.
I thought because the ad claimed the candy was "too good for
children," that I must be doing a naughty thing in eating it!
To burst my bubble, I told my mother about the ad, and she
replied "that's stupid! It's candy! There's nothing bad in it!" ~
